Ikebana Vase

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, centered on simplicity, asymmetry, and the balance between form and space. It highlights not only flowers, but also stems, leaves, and emptiness to express season and mood. Inspired by this philosophy, we designed a natural wood vase with a light, asymmetrical form in Georgia. Its shape enhances the quiet presence of each arrangement. What may seem uneven is carefully considered, responding to the weight and structure of flowers and kenzan to create a natural balance. Traditionally placed below eye level, the vase has a hidden leg that creates the impression it is floating, adding a sense of lightness and calm. The top surface features Naguri (名栗), a hand-carved finish that gives each piece a unique texture. Every vase is crafted by Georgian artisans at KAO Furniture. Sustainability is central to our process. Made from 100% Georgian walnut, we use local and recycled materials whenever possible. The product is now available exclusively at a Georgian concept store in Tbilisi, reflecting our “locally grown & consumed” philosophy. By bringing Japanese culture into a locally made Georgian object, we express our vision of spreading the Japanese spirit through sustainability.

自然や季節、空間との独特な調和を織りなす日本固有の生け花からインスピレーションを受けた花台をジョージアでの商品化に向けてデザインした。一見すると不均一に見えるフォルムは、花を生けるバランスと剣山の重量を緻密に構造体へ反映させた結果であり、生け花のもつ非対称性コンセプトをそのまま花台にも踏襲させた。花から台までトータルで日本の美学を体現した一つの作品になり得るよう考慮し、丹念に形作りを進めた。目線によっては脚が隠れて浮遊しているかのようなフォルムの演出は、絶妙なアンバランスを美とする日本式空間哲学へのオマージュでもある。素材は全てジョージア産のウォールナットを使用。現地ジョージア人木工職人集団 Kao Furnitureによりネジを一切使用せず、組手や継手のみで制作され、天板にはハンドカットによる名栗加工を施した。このように日本人デザイナーとして日本の技法やエッセンスを説きつつ現地の職人と材料へ真摯に向き合いプロジェクトを進め、時にジョージアの様式を取り入れながら、まさに二人三脚で仕上げたプロダクトで現地ジョージアのコンセプトストアで限定販売される。つまり本作は素材、職人、販売という完全なジョージアでの地産地消スキームを確立した商品であると同時に日本の繊細な美学や思想をジョージア中に伝承する和の広告塔であり、それを肝に銘じて設計した。
