Tea Tray 2610

This project is a locally made and released product design initiative in Georgia. The tea tray is crafted from Georgian oak by the skilled Georgian artisans at Kao Furniture. It features a screw-free structure, built using traditional Japanese joinery techniques. This fusion reflects our pride in a “Made in Georgia” identity enriched with Japanese craftsmanship—symbolizing the combined heritage of Japanese and Georgian roots. The tray’s frame uses uniform 26mm x 10mm Georgian oak profiles, emphasizing our commitment to simplicity. These dimensions were also reverse-engineered from scrap wood disposals based on KAO’s daily production—making the tray’s minimalist and ecological approach central to its concept and name. The product is now available exclusively at the Georgian concept store Maizen Tbilisi. By bringing an authentic element of Japanese culture into a locally produced object, we aim to express our vision of true sustainability. As a Japanese design studio based in Georgia, sharing Japanese values—especially the locality & ecological philosophy—through local production is deeply meaningful to us.

この茶盆はジョージアでの生産、販売を目的としてデザインされたプロダクトデザインプロジェクトである。ジョージアのローカル家具製作集団、Kao Furnitureによる制作協力の下に商品化され、話題のローカルセレクトショップ、Maizen Tbilisiで独占販売するという地産地消スキームを構築、且つ繊細な日本美学の反映に徹底してこだわり抜いたプロジェクトである。素材は当然ジョージア産オークを使用、26mm x 10mmという断面サイズのみを使用したシンプルな構造をデザイン、様々なプロジェクトを手掛ける同Kaoの制作工場で発生する端材が本プロダクトの構造として極力再利用できるよう、端材効率のよいサイズを逆算して設計された。またその構造にはネジを一切使用せず日本の伝統的な継手を駆使して現地ジョージア人の職人によって丹念にハンドメイドで制作される。けっして大きなプロダクト販売計画ではないが、現地ジョージアの素材、職人、販売という完全な地産地消スキームを確立しつつ日本人デザイナーとして譲れない繊細な美学やエコロジー思想、そして日本文化の片鱗を遠く離れたジョージアで発信できる成果は小さくないはずである。
